A payment helps this month. A tighter, safer home can help for years. The federal Weatherization Assistance Program, or WAP, sends money through states, territories, and tribes to local providers that improve eligible homes.
What “weatherization” can mean
A local provider starts with an energy audit. The work is based on what that audit finds and what the program allows. It may include sealing air leaks, insulation, or work on heating and cooling systems. It is not a free kitchen remodel and it is not a blank check for any home repair.
Find the state office first
Use the Energy Department’s how-to-apply map. Your state page should lead to the local provider, often listed by county.
- Check the current state rules.
- Find your local weatherization provider.
- Submit the provider’s application and proof.
- If income eligible, wait for the provider’s scheduling and home review.
- Let the trained auditor decide which approved measures fit the home.
Yes, renters can ask
Both homeowners and renters may be eligible. A renter’s provider will need the landlord’s permission before work starts. Call before you spend hours on the form and ask how the provider handles rentals.
There can be a wait
Being income eligible does not always mean work starts next week. The local provider may use a waitlist and give priority to older adults, households with a person with a disability, families with children, high energy users, or households with a heavy energy burden.
Ask: “If I am placed on a waitlist, what keeps my application active, and when should I update my income or phone number?”
Get the house ready for the visit
Make a list of drafty rooms, comfort problems, and any safety issue you have noticed. Keep energy bills if the provider wants them. Clear safe access to the attic, furnace, water heater, and other areas the auditor may need to see. Do not climb or move anything risky.
Watch out for door-knockers
A person who shows up saying “the government sent me” is not proof. Call the local provider using the number on the state or federal page. Ask whether the person and appointment are real before letting anybody in.
Weatherization work is picked from an approved energy audit. The program does not promise every repair a home needs.
Use both lanes
If the bill is urgent, ask about LIHEAP or utility crisis help now. Weatherization is the slower lane for the home itself. You can ask the local office whether one application screens for both.
